Tipping On iPads Is A Heated Conversation On TikTok

“It’s going to ask you a couple of questions…”

Viral TikToker @eyeout4selen3r recently started a huge conversation about iPad tipping after sharing his recent experience picking up his to-go order. In his video he says, “Not to sound like a total hater, but genuinely what the hell is going on with this whole iPad tipping thing? Like, it has gotten so far out of hand it’s almost laughable.”

“OK, the other day I ordered food. I ordered it online, went to the website, put in what I wanted, sent out the order, then got into my car to pick it up. I get there, I give the girl my card to pay for my food, she puts it in, whatever.”

“Then, all of a sudden, she spins that iPad around. I get whiplash and she’s like, ‘Would you like to leave a tip?’ Girlfriend, for what? What did you do? No, I’m actually going to flip this thing right back at you. I will be taking a tip, 20% thanks. And once you’re done, grab me a shirt. I am clocking in because at this point I’m genuinely more of an employee at this establishment than you are and I would like to be compensated,” he concluded in his TikTok.

Well, @eyeout4selen3r‘s thoughts on iPad tipping brought TikTokers straight to the comment section.

People started sharing their own experiences that they didn’t believe warranted a tip.

And some people feel like they are now obligated to tip for things they did.

Tips are being asked for at self-checkout places.

And tips are even being asked for at pet shops where employees don’t help you with your items.

Many people are upset that the percentage of tips being asked for often exceeds 25%.

And feeling pressured into tipping is frustrating for some.

Lots of people feel that they would like to tip, just after they have experienced good service instead of before.

People know that items are already priced high enough so tipping for no added services is ridiculous to them.

More and more places are adding a service fee in addition to tipping and people are upset about it.

Some people have drawn a line for when and where they will leave an iPad tip.

The most frustrating aspect people shared is when they do tip but it feels unappreciated.

However, the other side of this debate is very important…

Because many people were quick to point out that there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that DOES warrant a tip.

These workers are doing a lot – even if you don’t realize it.

And any little tip helps when their wages are less than they should be.

The cashiers sometimes have to use money from their paycheck to pay the kitchen.

And, all around, tips help out all employees.

But the big picture is that the companies are relying on you for what they fail to pay their workers.

Lastly, ever since COVID, fewer people are working, so tipping those who ARE working matters.

So, if you work in a place that does iPad tipping, share your perspective in the comments!
